About The Event

  • Exploring the interface between malfunctioning technology and the cycles of nature, this show collects MMIX's most iconic work together from 2022-2025. MMIX's work has its pillars in the misrepresentation of reality, photomanipulation, malfunctioning technology, the vulnerable oddness of being human, spirituality in the age of the cyborg, and allowing a respectful space for the darker aspects of the self. Their past work has involved video reels which work as electronically protective amulets, and protective images that foreground filter distortions to create distance between the original subject and outside energies. Despite the digital nature of MMIX's finished images, they do not utilize A.I. or Photoshop in their creation process, preferring to use phones or televisions as a tactile method for distortion and controlled chaos. As digital and new media artists, they give special attention to photographing organic, nature-based, human and/or animal subjects in order to establish tension with their methodology of corrupting images via technology, with a keen focus on narrating the ephemerality of nature in all of its cycles, including the process of death, decay, coming to bloom, fruition, maturity and everywhere in between.  mmix-art.com

  • Artist Bios Both Rust and L attended performing arts schools growing up and continued to follow and explore their respective disciplines in the decades since--Rust going to college for Music Composition and L continuing education in a variety of dance forms and later pursuing comedy and immersive performance. L has an undergraduate concentration in Art History. Rust wrote and produced (including directing, performing, engineering, music, and sound design) the audio drama "Dream State" from Tynan Media in 2017-2018, and soon after joined the monthly immersive production "Lost Angels" as video/co-producer, with L also having been an ongoing immersive performer and character part-writer from 2015-2020. Together as MMIX, they create photography/video-based work that presents the tension between natural themes and digital technology. They draw inspiration from the heyday of alternative music videos of the 80s and 90s, as well as glitch art innovators like Rob Sheridan and Tachyons+. Since 2024, some of their accomplishments include multiple gallery features, exhibit finalist status, social media spotlights, and collaboration on several music videos, including the industrial band Contracult.
