Highways was founded in 1989 as an artists’ community dedicated to exploring new performance forms and serving as an interchange among artists, critics, and the public. Its earliest intention was to articulate and work through the crises of living in the last decade of the 20th Century. Now, well into the 21st Century, Highways has navigated multiple challenges, including adapting to the emergence of new generations of artists, managing 21st Century economics, overcoming the 2008 financial crisis, and, most recently, addressing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, Highways remains dedicated to showcasing progressive works by artists addressing political, social, psychological, and personal themes. Over the span of 35 years, Highways has produced more than 2,000 presentations.
