Sulpicia Songs is a solo electroacoustic opera-theater work for voice, electronics, and piano.
Caught between an ancient and future self in the endless process of “coming of age,” performer-composer Elliot Menard looks to the ~26 BCE poems of Sulpicia (the only ancient Roman female poet whose work survives) to explore her own 2026 CE growing pains and power struggles in love, work, and family as she approaches her 30th birthday.
The music blends experimental opera with confessional pop, weaving Sulpicia’s elegiac inner world (petulance, birthday diva, feverish fixation, lack-of-agency lamentation, et cetera) together with Elliot’s: a breakup, dating-app disasters, a strained relationship to the Roman virtue pietas, intergenerational family baggage, patriarchy problems, and the difficulty (and perseverance!) of communication.
Collaged projections by director-designer Rosie Tabachnick are both supertitles (texts and translations) and windows into the inner worlds of each song.
