TONY BROWN, GIOJ DE MARCO, & JULIE SCHUSTACK- Reliving
September 5, 2015 - October 12, 2015
A person’s home plays a large part in shaping their identities. Individual characteristics, philosophies and personal identities are inextricably linked to where one comes from. The artists in this show respond to the various locations of the home; it’s architectural space, it’s psychological boundaries, it’s cultural influence. Concerned with the lived experience of architecture, the memories and dreams it engenders, the artists in this exhibit collaborate and produce a cohesive sculptural installation through the acts of deconstructing, displacing and replicating familiar objects and spaces.
Gioj’s sculptures explore the domestic environment as it is virtually experienced in movies and in TV shows. These free standing hand-build clay sculptures are replicas of Hollywood rental objects. With a pressing focus on mundane objects such as lamps, heaters and cooking utensils, the work also becomes a conceptual reference to the tradition of the still life: the inanimate comes alive and the vulgar assumes central focus.
Tony’s work deals with the space between memory and accumulation, the daily and domestic. Within the process of constant deconstruction of existing objects, elements are sifted through various screens, recombined and neatly slid into a place that seems natural despite the abandonment of original function.
Julie’s work explores function as it connects to absurdity, science and/or architecture. Her work is inspired by the process of problem solving, and the subjects that she explores range but usually explore the family dynamic that she grew up with.
