ALEXA HUNTER & GILLIAN CAMERON – The Alexian Chronicles: An Alchemist Cabaret
May 19, 2017 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm PDT
Event Navigation

As part of Highways’ 2017 BEHOLD! Queer Arts Series, The Alexian Chronicles: An Alchemical Cabaret explores the personal transformations – identity, gender, age, and spirit – of two women, Alexa Hunter and Gillian Cameron, through the lens of Alchemy via song, story and image. Things change. The human experience is one of mutability and transfiguration – a fact which becomes readily apparent when we drag out our old photographs. Transformation also forms the core of Alchemy, which is not only about transforming the elements but about transforming humans, too. It is the search for the higher order of all substance – and a spiritual journey, the end of which is the transfiguration of the soul. Getting older gives us the opportunity for transfiguration – whether we want it or not. Our world changes along with our bodies, and we must change with them. Explore these changes with Alexa and Gillian, two women in transition.

Alexa Hunter is delighted to be back at Highways, having directed John Cantwell’s Saltine Crackers, and starred in her own To the Light Box here. Performance work includes directing and acting in theatre, making music in rock clubs and cabarets, and spinning tales of great Ulysses to high school students. Her early performance and filmmaking work can be seen this fall in the group show Club 57 at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. During last 7 years Alexa has returned to her first love, visual art, as a metal and lapidary artist. She is a proud member of the Culver City Rock and Mineral Club and the Metal Arts Society of Southern California. Her jewelry work can be found at alexahunterdesign.com.
There are many words that describe aspects of Gillian Cameron: teacher, artist, storyteller, parent… She also likes “mystic and magical being.” “Emanation of the Divine Feminine” sits pretty well with her as well. Gillian has performed as a storyteller within the transgender and feminist spirituality communities, sings interminable ballads, and is the author and illustrator of Calogrenant, a web comic about the adventures of an Arthurian knight coming to terms with who she is, which can be seen weekly at calogrenant.com. (She has just published the second volume of Calodrenant’s adventures: Maiden Britannia.)
