Linda Ravenswood and Brian Sonia-Wallace perform two solo pieces, conceived together, apart. The performances follow each other, are adjacent to one another, speak to each other, but they stand by themselves. In making the work, the two artists did not meet in person but worked with email, telephone, and social media to communicate and build the conversation. The performance at Highways is the construction made from those interrogations, alienations, fantasies. The pieces hold literary and somatic components and bespeak place, sexuality and the influence of technology in contemporary relational parlay.
Gabriela Simich’s “#Twitterpated” – Guided by hashtags and retweets, I travel the world of social networking. I wonder if this is true love or just me #twitterpated.
Sandy Simona’s “Lost in Lviv” – A time capsule of memories, secrets and the most precious experiences of the Belman sisters – three sisters who immigrate to America from the U.S.S.R before and after Perestroika. The solo work explores the anecdotes and remembrances they left behind, to wander the streets of Lviv, Ukraine. Intimate winks and glimpses of their past lives, as they reinvent themselves in America today.
Liz Toonkel’s “An Aria for the Whale Who Beached Herself” looks at the tragic female through the lens of the dying beast. Posing in the creature’s skin, the artist confronts the foreboding nature of femininity in an effort to transcend the confines her own skin.
