SIMONE FORTI & CARMELA HERMANN DIETRICH – Rematch
December 9 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm$20.00 - $25.00
Simone Forti is a dancer, artist and writer based in Los Angeles. Her early “Dance Constructions” were influential in the reinventing of dance that took place in New York in the 1960s and 70s. Over the years Forti has developed movement vocabularies based on studies of animals movements, of the dynamics of circling, and of the synergy between moving and speaking as in her improvisational “News Animations” and she has collaborated with many colleagues, including extensively with Carmela Hermann Dietrich. Forti’s book Handbook in Motion was published in 1974 by the Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. (Distributed by Contact Editions www.contactquarterly.com) Her book Oh, Tongue was edited and published by Fred Dewey for Beyond Baroque Books, in 2003. Forti is represented by The Box LA Gallery.
Carmela Hermann Dietrich is a Los Angeles-based choreographer. She creates dances informed by personal history, politics, and the things people don’t discuss in public. Her article, Learning to Speak, about being mentored by and collaborating with Simone Forti, was published in Taken By Surprise: A Dance Improvisation Reader (Weslyan University Press, 2003). She creates duets with longtime collaborator Terrence Luke Johnson which humorously take on issues of sex, death, and intimacy. Her last dance theater work, In Plain Sight, created with Ally Voye was a series of serio-comedic choreographic portraits, featuring four real-life people grappling with compulsive behaviors. Carmela has taught choreography and improvisation at UCLA, SMC, Lawrence University, and CSULB, and IDFest.
