New Shoes 3
July 13, 2013 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm PDT
$15
The third installment in an ongoing series of new and in-development dance and physical theater works by emerging and established Southern California-based choreographers, directors and ensembles.
New Shoes 3 features the following works:
Annabel Movement Ensemble’s “Tumultuous” is a glimpse into the archetypes of the twisted and aristocratic world of Leo Tolstoy’s novel, Anna Karenina. Fusing movement and music on a foundation of Tolstoy’s poetic language, “Tumultuous” is a ticket for the darkest train ride of love, nostalgia, memory and liberation.
How can we break out of the constraints of capitalist culture? Making connections between office workers and athletes, Hanna Kovenock, Julia Marasa, and Paige Tighe play with this idea in “LABOR-ation.”
Deena Selenow, Paul Fraser and Genevieve Gearhart’s “Katastrofi,” is a musical cliff’s note to Sophocles’ gut-wrenching tragedy The Women of Trachis, sung through the lens of deconstructed musical themes inspired by Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River.” A merging of ancient and modern pop, KATASTROFI puts two classics side by side in a dementedly playful retelling of Sophocles’ cautionary story of love, betrayal and good intentions gone awry.
Inspired by the story of Anne Frank and the strength of those hiding with her in the Annex, Winter Dance Theater’s “The Day I Met Anne Frank” takes the audience on a compassionate journey of dance, theater and song.
