MONICA PALACIOS – Queer Chicana Soul
October 12, 2012 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm$15 - $20
Celebrate thirty years of groundbreaking work from critically acclaimed lesbian Chicana writer and performer Monica Palacios with the retrospective performance Queer Chicana Soul.
In 1982, at a time when being openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) as an entertainer was mostly unheard of, Monica stepped onto the stage becoming the first openly lesbian Chicana comic. “My specific focus as a writer and performer has always been to give visibility to complex LGBT Chicana/o, Latina/o characters that are absent from mainstream theater, television, and film,” says Palacios. “As always, my work has to make a difference on this planet and I believe I have done this throughout my thirty-year career.”
For three decades, her artistic work on culture, identity, and sexuality, has influenced and inspired emerging Chicano, Latino, and LGBT writers and performers. “Monica is a maverick who bravely carved a place for herself, dealing with issues of nationality, sexuality, and women’s culture,” said Luis Alfaro, MacArthur Genius Award recipient and theater professor at the University of Southern California. “She is honest, innovative, and deeply funny.”
With over two hundred performances, seventeen years of experience as an educator, production of fourteen self-written plays, and dozens of television and radio appearances under her belt as well as numerous awards such as Out Magazine’s “Out 100,” the National Gay and Lesbian Performance Award, and a Postdoctoral Rockefeller Fellowship, Monica is nationally recognized as an artist at the forefront of Chicano, Latino, queer, lesbian, and feminist performance.
