Highways’ 13th Annual Poetry Fest: MELROSE POETRY BUREAU – When the Poetry Hits the Fan
May 13 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm
One event on May 13, 2017 at 8:30pm
Highways’ 13th Annual Poetry Fest: When the Poetry Hits the Fan is a tightrope walk of improvised poetry, theater, and music, where the tightrope is unraveling quickly over a shark tank and is on fire. Metaphorically speaking. LA-based Melrose Poetry Bureau, specialists in improvised poetry cabaret will lead poets through a series of escalating challenges inspired by words and ideas from the audience in attendance.
One part variety show, one part improvised poetry, this performance puts writers and artists on stage with typewriters, in front of an audience, with the urgent task of making something. Something meaningful? powerful? funny? truthful? This is an invitation into the backroom at the circus, the research & development lab of the traveling road show as it screeches into town.
Each performance will be different, with just as much opportunity for glory as there is for complete and total failure. With the creative process onstage, and the audience invited into the making experience we ask, what happens when the poetry hits the fan?
Friday + Saturday, May 12 + 13 @ 8.30pm
$20 general admission / $15 students, seniors
Made possible in part by the City of Santa Monica CAP Grant Program,
a project of the City of Santa Monica Arts Commission.
The Melrose Poetry Bureau creates interactive poetry experiences on typewriters. Based in Los Angeles, MPB blurs the boundaries between poetry, theater, and improvisation to create connection through ink in a wired-in world. Co-directed by Bobby Gordon, Nayeli Knudsen, and Brian Sonia-Wallace the bureau offers community building workshops, custom poetry for events, and live stage shows. MPB has been mentoring students in Gordon’s World Arts & Cultures/Dance 2 Poetry and Performance class for the duration of their academic quarter, training them in the art of writing as performance.
