MARIEL CARRANZA, Encounter #20
May 10, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Statement from Mariel Carranza:
“For Construal, my last performance exhibition at Highways Performance Space in October of 2011, I invited other performers familiar with my work to do a construal – an embodied reading and explication — of themes and methods they observed in my work, distinguishing its processes through their own interpretation and projections.
The experience of viewing facets and themes of my own work through the eyes, minds and bodies of other artists revealed to me that, when working simultaneously, independently yet sharing a mode of action, these artists alone defined what and where the performance happened.
Soon after this performance, I met Boris Nieslony, one of the founders of Black Market International (BMI), a collective of performance makers largely based in Europe and the United Kingdom. Nieslony and other BMI founders introduced me to the Black Market philosophy, as well as Nieslony’s Black Kit, a mobile archive of performance art documentation, one of the most important in the world. This experience inspired me to initiate a continuous series of performances, known as “Encounters,” at my studio, bringing together a remarkable group of Los Angeles-based performance artists open to the idea of creating spontaneous, collaborative performances as a group.
I sent an invitation for Encounter #1, which took place on July 15, 2012. In sum, the invitation explained that:
– There will be no audience or documentation.
– You can bring some materials, although you should not prepare in advance.
– Performance should manifest at the encounter…
-…where your vulnerability became your guide.
-…where the notion of failure or achievement is irrelevant.
– Dinner will be served afterwards
Over time, the definition of the purpose and the conditions of Encounter have been revised:
Encounter is a space where we encounter each other, ourselves, and the space itself. We perform with and for one another within given conditions. There is no preparation, no agenda. Things unfold on their own. We agree that there will be no idle observers; everyone is active in the space.
We are comprised of a fairly consistent group of art makers from widely different backgrounds and we’ve established familiarity and a history of working together in this manner over the past two years. With no regard for hierarchy of acceptable or preferred practice styles, we move fluidly between ritual, task, movement, theatrical and improv-based performance practices. We come to the space with our own histories. We are rigorous in our willingness to be open to the unplanned. We trust the unpredictability of the moment. We agree to fully commit to what is there.
Encounter is a response, provocation, play, release, curiosity, exploration, danger, observation and fluid recalibration. Little by little, things unfold. Maybe we temporarily become uncanny monsters, reclaiming childhood without sentimentality.
Encounter #20 takes place at Highways Performance Space to encounter its space and history and to celebrate this intrepid, important venue’s 25th anniversary. It is an honor to announce that Belfast-based Alastair MacLennan, member of Black Market International, will be joining us.
Participants: Mariel Carranza, Dino Dinco, Rafa Esparza, Rochelle Fabb, Doran George, Douglas Green, Asher Hartman, Rebeca Hernandez, Carol McDowell, Alastair MacLennan, Sara Schnadt, Rossen Ventzislavov, Samuel White, Allison Wyper, Ladan Yalzadeh and others
