EMILY THOMAS – Love Whole
July 22, 2015 @ 8:00 am - August 23, 2015 @ 5:00 pm PDT
Love Whole, to be confused with the emptiness that is full, a universal void residing somewhere in the space of where our hearts used to be, explores the act of imagination in filling that bottomless pit, a vagina-heart-hole in the head that births our existence, with spectral visions, through magical divining tools of crystals, misty mountains, and all matter of self-induced illusions of reality objectification.
Where one body ends and begins can be all too clear. Assigning ourselves and others in the world around us with particular attributes of visual separateness, as in “my friend with the great teeth” or “that girl on the street with creamy skin” or “that guy with funny eyes.” We break down bodies with our eyes, and as we do this, our eyes break into parts of eyeballs, pupils, and false eyelashes.
Look! You with an eyelash on your cheek, make a wish on a vision
and blow it away with eyelids closed before it’s too late.
With an impassioned, feminist approach, involving a fascination with the evolution of the veiled feminine from iconic prehistoric mother to Virgin Mary to Vaudevillian chorus, working-girl turned hardcore sex object within the pornographic, cult film genre of Nunsploitation, in Love Whole the stage is set for a cosmic realignment of celestial bodies. Here, at the black hole in the center of the Milky Way, maybe if we go back far enough to the primordial beginning of time, perhaps another sort of “Big Bang” space sexcapade can recreate all of the parts that make up the whole of ourselves and our whole selves as parts of a singular universal cosmic occurrence for old time’s sake.
Let us take each other’s hands now as we enter the Abyss.
About the Artist:
My artistic practice relies upon psycho-spiritual development through vigorous implementation of self-experimental techniques, such as, meditation, astrology, fasting, nature walks, vision quests, health-food, self-help, hypnosis, bi-yearly personality testing, alchemy, crystal-gazing, astral travel, yoga, tarot, and much more. Often I receive images during what I would like to think as being the intellectual peak of orgasm. I then work to materialize these visionary states within an installation through animation, film, sculpture, painting, photography, and sound within the fabrication of a total, self-reflecting world of initiatory experience.
I am currently fascinated with the New Age principle of manifesting reality in dialogue with 19th century American Manifest Destiny, in which the indigenous belief systems of the country were routinely driven out, as imperialist ideologies of a new America swept westward on the feet of prospectors in search of precious land and human resources. My current artistic inspiration involves navigating the evolution of spiritual beliefs within contemporary subcultures of California in relationship to this not too distant past and the worldwide historical tragedy of the erasure of the ancient deity of Mother Nature from public education textbooks, evidence of which is continually being pawned off as yet another vague fertility cult. Furthermore, I am interested in the creativity cult that is Contemporary Art, viewing the art gallery as a church, a meeting point where communities can discuss relevant socio-spiritual happenings, and the power art can have to reshape our collective destiny, as images surface from the depths of our consciousness to be liberated by our collective awareness.
