CLAIRE ANNA BAKER & REBECCA PAPPAS – Couds And Claves
June 30, 2015 @ 8:00 am - July 21, 2015 @ 10:00 pm
Couds and Claves is a dynamic collaboration between choreographer Rebecca Pappas and artist Claire Anna Baker.
Artist Claire Anna Baker creates sculptural source installations that she observes in the process of making large-scale, physical ink paintings. She translates this constructed landscape –here made of materials such as mirrors and black foil– into her own visual language of calligraphic marks. In Couds and Claves, Baker transforms this spatial translation of marks into a cyclical kinetic stream with choreographer Rebecca Pappas.
Pappas’ dancers engage Baker’s sculptural source materials, creating and dissipating an immediate topography. The dancers work individually and in concert to form and disappear caves, eddies, rivers, and cracking ice. The piece is abstract, fragile, and in constant motion. It uses movement –and the shifting imprint of movement– to expose the fragility in the monumental.
Claire Anna Baker (b. 1983, Berkeley, CA) lives and works in Los Angeles. She earned her MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2008, and was the recipient of the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Artist Grant in 2011. She is represented by Moskowitz Bayse Gallery in Los Angeles.
