Premiering July 10th & July 11th, Friday & Saturday @ 8:30pm
A double header of new works by Alexx makes dances (choreographer Alexx Shilling) and Pappas and Dancers (choreographer Rebecca Pappas), featuring Pappas’ A DANCE CONCERING ITSELF WITH HISTORY AND MEMORY, a joyful ritual for forgetting and Shilling’s Absence: A History – a suspicious attempt at recreating a past without proof.
A DANCE CONCERNING ITSELF WITH HISTORY AND MEMORY a joyful ritual for forgetting The fragile yet powerful nature of memories is the central theme of the duet a dance concerning itself with history and memory. The show integrates fragments of memory from the audience into a joyful, balloon-filled celebration that discombobulates, rearranges, and releases the past.
Direction: Rebecca Pappas Choreography: Rebecca Pappas with Genevieve Carson and Jesse Saler Music: Christopher Danforth, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Bonobo, Broadcast, and R.E.M. Performers: Rebecca Pappas, Alexx Shilling Pappas and Dancers has been presenting work in CA since 2003.
Rebecca Pappas makes dance that addresses the body as an archive for personal and social memory. Her choreography has toured nationally and internationally, and has received residencies from Yaddo and Djerassi, and support from organizations such as the Mellon Foundation, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, and CHIME. She currently creates work in Los Angeles, and Indianapolis, and is an Assistant Professor of Dance at Ball State University.
Absence: a History meets us at the intersection between dance and photography. In an exploration of the significant, the stage becomes a laboratory for memory; full of holes, the ensemble re-constructs photographic images both still and alive in an effort to re-imagine a fragmented past where absence and loss have reigned in the choreographer’s post-memory.
