In a feminist re-visioning of the English folk song “Mr. Fox,” performers Melissa C. Thompson and Julia Hinderlie create a “fat girl folk tale,” that blurs the line between myth and personal narrative and examines whether the size of the body can determine a woman’s capacity for love. Drawing on physical performance, religious iconography, found objects and autobiography, this delicate, daring and sometimes dark performance uses humor, pathos, and tension to indicate where our stories resonate the most—within our bodies.
Although based in the Midwest, The Sacred Heart Archive stems from a European tradition of experimental physical theatre in the spirit of ground-breaking groups such as Cardiff Laboratory Theatre in Wales. In fact, ensemble members Hinderlie and Thompson trained extensively with Cardiff Lab founders Richard Gough and Mike Pearson, and both Hinderlie and Thompson continue to work with Richard Gough in his internationally-renowned series of food performances, such as The Last Supper (installments of which have appeared in the UK, The Netherlands, the US, and Japan), and the banquet performance Federal Reserve (in the US). Individually, Thompson and Gough have also worked with a series of national and international performance artists, such as the NEA-4’s Tim Miller, New York City’s Elevator Repair Service, and Malaysian “urban shaman” Aida Rezda.
